The goal of the podcast, hosted by Matt Phillips (creator of runchatlive.com), is to deliver to Soft Tissue Therapists of all levels (including massage therapists, sports therapists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, chiropractors, etc.) up to date information on how to be a modern, successful, effective health care practitioner, with a gold star reputation for being able to help people in pain and/or looking for performance gains. Under current guidelines (at time of writing), the Government has made it clear that Sports Therapists & Massage Therapists are not allowed to see clients face to face (despite what a couple of other professional associations have said to their members). Gary Benson, founder of the STA explains why this is the case, including a very interesting discussion on why Sports Therapists can't work but Physiotherapists can.
There are many ways Sports & Massage Therapists can still help clients & patients, and in Ep.33 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast special guest Liz Bayley, resident Physio at The Musical Theatre Academy and First Contact Physiotherapist, helps us discuss how we can do this via Virtual Consultation.
Before completing her Masters in Physiotherapy, Liz worked as a sports therapist in the West End on shows such as Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, Shrek, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Chicago, Matilda and Jersey Boys.
A professional dancer herself for 15 years, Liz has performed all over the world and has a wonderful understanding of being both the patient and the therapist, giving her unique insights into injury rehabilitation. Liz discusses how she uses this insight to make the most of Virtual Consultation, both with dancers and the non athletic population.
Join us LIVE at 8pm (GMT) on Tuesday 12th of January. Non STA members are as always welcome!

Happy New Year! With the Covid19 pandemic continuing to place huge pressures on our industry, the Sports Therapy Association Podcast is dedicated to continue providing you with support throughout 2021, including the latest updates on industry guidelines and of course special guests sharing their experience, advice & information to enhance your skills and business throughout these difficult times.
We start the year proudly with a “you asked for him, we got him” moment. Ep.32 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast brings you the one & only special Walt Fritz, a hugely respected name within the soft tissue industry.
Walt has been teaching Massage, Occupational, and Physical Therapists for over two decades. Having trained and worked for some of the pioneers of Myofascial Release (MFR), Walt decided it was time to move the traditional MFR narrative from its historical roots into more modern and accepted narratives of neurological explanation. Though he still calls his work myofascial release, Walt dedicates his time to helping therapists move beyond the traditionally taught idea that we are capable of selectively targeting one tissue, fascia or otherwise.
Using a strong base of neurologic-based effects and influences, Walt teaches how touch & manual therapy have universal qualities that can be explained in a wide variety of ways, of which the myofascial release perspective is just one.

With new tier system rules now in place for December in the UK, Gary Benson takes questions on what this means for soft tissue therapists. All three tiers face limits on gatherings and rules to cover faces, but non-essential retail has been allowed to reopen, but how long will this last for?
Scott Loynes, Regional Rep Co-ordinator for the Sports Therapy Association, also reveals results of his recent survey into what Soft Tissue Therapists want & expect from the Professional Body they are affiliated with, a survey he released at the end of October to various groups across social media. The results may surprise you!

What are Essential Health Services Anyway with guest Jemma Oliver - #STA27

For Sports Therapists & Sports Massage Therapists, the latest lockdown has brought guidelines that are far from clear with regards to whether seeing patients face to face, much seeming to hinge on what your interpretation is of 'Essential To Health'. The common take-home message for many therapists seems to be if you (or a physiotherapist colleague) can demonstrate that the service you provide is essential to that patient's health, then you can see that patient face to face (subject to all Covid19 precautions being in place, including an initial virtual consultation to determine the need).
To help us discuss 'what classifies as essential health services?', we welcome this week in Ep.27 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast special guest Jemma Oliver, creator of the 'Physio & Therapist Support Group' on Facebook. Jemma started out as a sports massage therapist before becoming a physiotherapist, and is a key player in breaking down traditional barriers seen too often in the healthcare industry. Her latest project physiosupport.co.uk offers support for therapists in their work environment and support for clinics.

In Ep.26 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast we have the pleasure of welcoming special guest Andrew Caldwell, Clinical Director & Consultant Physiotherapist at Active Therapy.
As head of sports medicine/lead physio at Hearts FC for 3 years and 5 years working as Women’s FA physio and Regional LTA physio at the high performance centres at Loughborough University, Andrew has a huge amount of experience working with both sporting & non-sporting populations. Together we will take a look at the differences and similarities when it comes to not only treating these populations, but also building relationships and marketing.
