The Sports Therapy Association Podcast is recorded LIVE every Tuesday at 8pm (UK) on the Sports Therapy Association YouTube channel and Facebook Page, and then uploaded as a podcast. You do not have to be an STA member to attend the live recordings - it is a chance to network with fellow therapists and discuss topics that together help us all move forward as an industry. The goal of the podcast, hosted by Matt Phillips (creator of runchatlive.com), is to deliver to Soft Tissue Therapists of all levels (including massage therapists, sports therapists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, chiropractors, etc.) up to date information on how to be a modern, successful, effective health care practitioner, with a gold star reputation for being able to help people in pain and/or looking for performance gains. The Sports Therapy Association (STA) is a professional representation for Sports Therapists, Sports Injury Therapists and Soft Tissue Therapists. We have worked passionately to develop a truly independent and ethical association that is committed to raising standards across the industry and progressing opportunities for our valued members.

How much do male soft tissue therapists really know about Women's Health? How much should they know? In Part 3 of this month's focus on Women's Health, we look at these questions and more, with the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast now being streamed LIVE exclusively to YouTube and then uploaded as a podcast.
In order to discuss this topic, host Matt Phillips welcomes back to the show Matt Scarsbrook, one third of fantastic industry educators 'The Massage Collective' (with Anna Maria Mazzieri & Becky DeMott Horton).
Matt & Matt are joined by special guest 'Katie', who having been in her own words the "token woman on the leadership teams in most of the businesses I have worked for" has graciously agreed to "step up and be the token woman to represent all the vaginas out there."
Topics discussed include:
- How very little society talks about the Menopause
- How Women's Health issues are rarely talked about unless it happens to you or one of your friends
- The Government's Women's Health Strategy: Call For Evidence
- Aristoteles and Female Testicles
- The implications of medical research being historically done by men on men or animals
- The lack of training across all health care providers
- Cardiovascular disease and women
- Could you tell if a woman was having a heart attack?
- Sex education: foo-foos and twinkles
- How soft tissue therapists can help make a difference to reducing the taboo in Women's Health.
About the Guests
Matt Scarsbrook is a Soft Tissue Therapist, one third of The Massage Collective and Physio Matters' new Digital Media Producer. He’s recently started the Matt Scarsbrook YouTube channel aimed at bringing some trustworthy Musculoskeletal (MSK) information to the platform, using his own shamelessly terrible sense of humour.
Katie (The Woman) is someone who by her own admission loves conversations that push the boundaries of social norms and asking deep and intimate questions to people she barely knows. Having been the token woman on the leadership teams in most of the businesses she has worked for, she welcomed the chance on our invitation to step up and be the token woman to 'represent all the vaginas out there'. And we're so glad she did. Thanks Katie!

Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
We continue our February 'Focus on WOMEN'S HEALTH' here on the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast, with Part 2 of the series: 'Menopause Transition: Soft Tissue Implications'.
Joining us is special guest Jenny Burrell, Head & Founder of Burrell Education, one of the UK's leading-edge educators in the field of modern Pregnancy, Post Baby, 3rd Age (Peri-to Post-Menopause) and Female Fitness, Wellness, Massage + Bodywork Therapies.
In this episode, Jenny discusses the soft tissue implications of the Menopause Transition, providing information that is vital to soft tissue therapists who wish to help female clients become educated about their own body, empowering them to be their own deepest advocate for health in both good and challenging times.
About the Guest
Jenny Burrell created Burrell Education back in 2007 to revolutionize the way fitness professionals work in wellness, nutrition, soft-tissue therapy and fitness with pregnant, post baby and peri to post menopausal women. She is the creator of the Core Health wellness system, Holistic Core Restore® with nearly 100 Licensees in the UK and Internationally.
Holistic Core Restore was created as a direct response to the Pelvic Health and continence issues Jenny herself experienced after Sub-Total Abdominal Hysterectomy. Fuelled by the significant lack of education and aftercare post-op, Jenny made a pledge to dedicate herself to creating a Pelvic Floor and Core rehab programme that all women could benefit from.

A new month means a new Focus Topic here on the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast, and the topic for February is... WOMEN'S HEALTH.
To start off our month, we welcome back to the podcast special guests Dr Fiona Higgs and Debs Thurlow-Rowley, who are together about to launch their own project & podcast: 'Women in Sports Therapy' (WIST).
Fiona & Debs discuss their new project how a combination of their own personal experience and that of patients they see in clinic highlights a continued need for an increase in communication when it comes to Women's Health. They explain how each new monthly episode will cover an issue that might affect anyone who possesses a female reproductive system. From ovulatory cycles to opening hours - the aim of the game will be to discuss and offer helpful insights and practical information relating to clients and practitioners alike.
Fiona & Debs stress that you don't have to identify as a woman to enjoy this podcast. With themes spanning from health to business acumen to planning for work-life balance and everything in between - the WIST podcast will be for anyone working within the field of Sports Therapy who would like to learn more about the issues that affect this demographic.
Episodes will be released on the last Monday of every month, starting February 28th. If you have any suggestions or questions for the show, email: wist@thesta.co.uk
- Episode 1: Periods: Excessive blood loss, deficiencies and anaemia
- Episode 2: Women's Pelvic Health: Endometriosis
- Episode 3: Menopause: Menopause vs Perimenopause
- Episode 4: Work-life Balance: Managing life around hormones
- Episode 5: Role Models, with special guest Dr Claire Minshull!
NOTE: Due to technical issues, Debs Thurlow-Rowley was not able to join us until later in the show. The original live recording has been edited slightly.
About the Guests
Dr Fiona Higgs

With over a decade of experience working in Higher Education in research, teaching and student support Fiona has made it her mission to bring to life the drier scientific subjects taught in traditional degree programmes through her scenario-based teaching methods. Alongside her ambitions to improve scientific literacy and confidence in the Sports Therapy community, Fiona is also committed to reducing barriers to education and learning for those who find themselves unable to access opportunities due to financial cost, limited prior learning, and health and care responsibilities. Her ever popular 'pay what you can' workshop pricing structure and 'Move Well Learning Grant' scheme are practical examples of Fiona's belief that education should be accessible to all.
Debs Thurlow Rowley
Is a Soft Tissue Massage practitioner that conducts prescriptive Foot Mapping (using reflexes in the feet) and a ‘whole health’ approach from her clinic 'Serenity Massage Therapy' based in Bedfordshire. - Double Olympian
- 6 x Commonwealth Games Medals
- Commonwealth Games Champion
- British Record Holder
- Recipient of an MBE in 2011 for services to weightlifting
Since retiring from competition, Michaela focuses her time helping others achieve their potential, and over the last 2 decades has coached over 20 athletes to compete on the international stage.
Through 'Breeze Academy' (https://powerposition.co.uk), Michaela has helped Crossfitters all over the world improve their Olympic lifts, teaching how to move consistently, safely and efficiently in order to optimise personal performance.
STA members, look out for details of seminars & courses with Michaela, coming soon!
Questions to Michaela included:
- In a career spanning over 2 decades including Team GB at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008,
4 consecutive Commonwealth Games and more, you’ve had your fair share of injuries and set backs. Looking back, do you think some of the injury could have been avoided? - Does your experience of injury help you help others avoid it? How much of the cause is technique?
- Looking at Weightlifting as part of CrossFit, do you think the risk of injury is more prevalent? If so, why?
-
Is the whole concept of lifting heavy against the clock a recipe for disaster in itself?
-
Since retiring you now help others achieve their potential and have actually coached over 20 athletes to compete on the international stage, including Ellie Pryor - Britain’s first ever Youth Olympian in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting who you started coaching at the age of 11. What age can one start weightlifting?
-
How did it feel being awarded an MBE in the 2011 Queens Birthday Honours list, for your services to Weightlifting?
-
Tell us about the courses and seminars you have coming up. Some have specifically soft tissue therapists in mind, yes?

Wednesday Dec 15, 2021
And so our December 'Focus on Fascia' continues! Last week in Ep.79 we were joined by highly esteemed Julian Baker of Functional Anatomy and Ana Barretxeguren of Evolve Movement Education.
*Apologies for the poor sound quality in this episode. We are normally crystal clear!*
This week we welcome to the show live from New York & Florida: Walt Fritz and Tania Velásquez. Walt, our guest in Ep.32 back in January 'Manual Therapy in 2021', has been teaching Massage, Occupational, and Physical Therapists for over two decades. Having trained and worked for some of the pioneers of Myofascial Release (MFR), Walt decided it was time to move the traditional MFR narrative from its historical roots into more modern and accepted narratives of neurological explanation. His 'Foundations in Manual Therapy Seminars' are helping therapists worldwide move beyond the traditionally teachings of fascia work.
Tania Velásquez is the founder of Pinpoint Education, an educational resource platform for massage professionals, manual therapists, and bodyworkers. She is also adjunct faculty at the Pacific College-NY campus where she teaches orthopedic/sports massage and kinesiology.
A huge thanks to both Walt and Tania for giving up their time to open up our December 'Focus on Fascia' month!
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Next week on December 21st, we are holding a LIVE open group discussion on Fascia related topics raised during our two expert episodes.
