STA98: ’In-Home Polysomnography’ with special guest Dr Amy M Bender
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
And so we reach the final part of our 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, with special guest Dr Amy M Bender, Director of Clinical Sleep Science at Cerebra, talking about 'In-Home Polysomnography' and sharing the results of host Matt Phillips' recent five week sleep study.
What is in-Home Polysomnography?
The most comprehensive form of sleep study currently available requires going to a sleep-lab. However, for many the sleeping environment is unnatural and equipment uncomfortable. A popular alternative is the ‘Home Sleep Apnea Test’ (HSAT), which though convenient only measures breathing and respiratory functions, not sleep quality.
Enter the ‘Cerebra Sleep System‘ – an in-home, self applied polysomnogram (PSG) that provides the quality diagnostics of an in-lab study with the convenience of Home Sleep Apnea Testing.
For those of you who like the nitty gritty, Cerebra Sleep System uses the patented algorithm Odds Ratio Product (ORP) that micro analyses the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal providing a continuous measure of sleep depth, moving beyond conventional scoring methods to dig deeper into brain activity.
The Cerebra Sleep System can measure brain waves (EEG), eye movement (EOG), respiratory data, leg and body movements, pulse oximetry, and heart rate (ECG).

Matt Phillips Sleep Study using ‘Cerebra Sleep System’
My personal five week sleep study included:
- Electroencephalography (EEG/brain waves).
- Electrooculography (EOG/eye movements).
- Electromyography (EMG/electrical activity of chin muscle).
- Daily reaction time tests to track performance.
- Questionnaires on perceived sleep quality, disturbances during the night.
- Tracking of daily exercise & use of electronics before bedtime.
In this podcast episode, topics discussed included:
- What are the benefits but also limitations of common consumer wearables like Fitbit and Oura ring?
- How does the Cerebra In-Home Polysomnogram Sleep System differ from the above?
- How useful is the data regarding the different stages of sleep, e.g. REM, N-REM, Deep Sleep, etc.?
- How did Matt Phillips find sleeping with the Cerebra headset on?
- How useful was it being held accountable each day by filling in questionnaires?
- What was Matt's Sleep Study expecting to find by removing caffeine consumption after week one?
- A look at the results from Matt's five week Sleep Study including:
- General Insights (sleep efficiency, sleep latency, reported sleep quality, and more)
- Actual sleep time per night
- Amount of waking up after going to sleep
- Effect of removing caffeine: evening sleepiness, reaction time, attention lapses - Take home messages from the study & Sleep Awareness Month

STA96: Sleep Awareness Month Pt2 - ’Sleep Trackers’ with guest Dr Olivia Walch
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast continues with Part 2: 'Sleep Trackables' with special guest Dr Olivia Walch, CEO of Arcascope, a company that develops science-backed apps to help people fix their sleep and circadian rhythms.
With an estimated one in three people in the UK reporting regular sleep complaints, it is not surprising that sleep trackers have become enormously popular over the last few years. On waking up, our faithful Fitbit, Oura Ring or Withings Sleep Analyzer (to name just three) will inform you of the quantity & quality of your night's sleep, but just how accurate are they? Can the information these consumer sleep wearables provide be put to good use, or are they just another modern day gadget causing dependency and anxiety?
Special guest Dr Olivia Walch takes us through such questions to see how marketing claims hold up under the scrutiny of science, and discusses what role they can play in improving sleep health.
Topics discussed include:
- What is the difference between sleep trackers and sleep wearables?
- How long have sleep trackers/wearables been used to assess sleep quanitity/quality?
- How has the technology in sleep wearables changed over time?
- How do scoring algorithms work?
- How accurate are popular sleep wearables from Garmin, Fitbit, Oura Ring, etc?
- Can popular consumer sleep wearables measure stages of sleep?
- What is the relationship like between sleep researchers and consumer brands for wearables?
- If we see clients/patients are wearing sleep trackers, what sort of conversations should we be having with them?
- Can sleep trackers cause 'orthosomnia' - the obsession for 'perfect' sleep?
- Using sleep wearables to measure sleep consistency.
- Controlling light exposure: one of the easiest & most accessible ways to improve sleep quality/quanity

STA94 CPD Focus: ’Recognising Rheumatology’ with special guest Jack March
Friday Apr 01, 2022
Friday Apr 01, 2022
In the final part of this month's 'Focus on CPD', we welcome special guest Jack March of www.rheumatology.physio. Jack is Clinical Lead for the Rheumatology service delivered by Chews Health, and one of the voices behind The Physio Matters Podcast.
In this live hour, Jack talks to us about his 'Recognising Rheumatology' CPD courses, designed to help soft tissue therapists recognise symptoms and signs of rheumatologic conditions in clinical practice.
This is of huge importance because, as Jack explains, these sympoms often 'masquerade' as the type of lower back pain which most therapists and patients will be sorted via massage and manual therapy and as a result can go undiagnosed for years delaying important disease-modifying treatment.
Jack's website https://rheumatology.physio/ includes blogs, details of courses and the highly recommended Recognising Rheumatology Audio Book.
The next courses Jack has coming up are:
- ONLINE - Recognising Rheumatology (half day): 12/April
- BIRMINGHAM - Recognising Rheumatology (full day): 07/May
- EXETER - Recognising Rheumatology (full day): 09/July
Topics discussed in this episode include:
- What is rheumatology?
- How many disorders does the term rheumatology encapsulate?
- Many health professionals including Physiotherapists don’t always spot Rheumatologic conditions. Why is this?
- What are some of the common symptoms of rheumatological conditions that allow them to masquerade as musculoskeletal issues?
- Common examples of missed diagnosis - plantarfasciopathy and tendinopathies
- Looking further than Cutaneous Psoriasis
- Other types of rheumatologic conditions that we should be aware of:
Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Gout.

Wednesday Mar 23, 2022
Wednesday Mar 23, 2022
And so we arrive at the fourth episode in this month's 'Focus on CPD' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast. For this show entitled 'Active Kids are not Mini Adults' we bring you Angela Jackson, a physiotherapist on a mission to stop the pain and frustration that can happen in youth sport when an athlete develops an injury that with the right education could have been avoided.
Angela has worked in the NHS, privately and with sporting teams and youth athletes across all levels sharing her expertise in understanding all aspects of youth athlete development. For 15 years she has been the Physiotherapist and Strength and Conditioning Consultant for Cheshire Cricket Board supporting the Emerging Player Programme, their coach education programme and providing workshops for parents and athletes on injury prevention and performance. She has also created coaching resources for the England & Wales Cricket Board Coaching Association “Wings to Fly” programme.
Anglea has created a series of courses “Active kids are not mini adults” and “Low back
Pain in Younger Athletes” for fellow health professionals available through her website angelajacksonphysio.com/
In this episode, Angela talks to us about the “Active kids are not mini adults” course, designed to teach therapists how to assess young athletes and develop a pathway for a safe return to sport and play whilst considering the impact of excess load on both the immature and mature body. The course can be taken as a fully online course with all practical elements studied via video recordings or an integrated online and F2F course where the theory modules are taken online in advance of a practical face-to-face day with Angela covering all aspects of assessment and return to play.
Topics discussed include:
-
Why there has historically been a lack of education when it comes to working with younger athletes
-
Anatomical differences of an immature skeleton
-
How to tell the maturation status of a child and understand its impact on pathology and rehabilitation

In the last of our March 'Focus on CPD' episodes on March 29th, special guest Jack March will be talking to us about his 'Recognising Rheumatology' CPD courses happening April, May and July both online and face to face. Jack was a guest back in Ep.38 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast: Rheumatology 101 with Jack March and generated a lot of interest in revealing how arthritis and other inflammatory or autoimmune conditions are far more common than many soft tissue therapists suspect, often disguising themselves as musculoskeletal issues. Many go undiagnosed for years delaying important disease-modifying treatment.

'Reconciling Biomechanics With Pain Science' is a practical course designed to provide therapists with a simplified yet strongly evidenced based biomechanical approach to injury & pain management that allows the development of skills that address all areas of the biopsychosocial contributors to the pain experience.
It teaches an alternative to the kinesiopathological model of pain & injury but still tries to answer when biomechanics matters. 'Reconciling Biomechanics With Pain Science' is coming to Cork, Ireland on Apr 2nd & 3rd 2022 at Pilates Physio Cork. Full details can be found at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/reconcilingbiomechanicswithpainscience/590774
About Greg Lehman
Greg lehman has been in clinical practice for more than 13 years as both a chiropractor and physiotherapist. He has held faculty and research positions conducting biomechanical research into the mechanisms of manual therapy, muscle activation during rehabilitation exercises and sports medicine, publishing more than 20 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has lectured at numerous global conferences on biomechanics and the biopsychosocial model, and his two day 'Reconciling Biomechanics With Pain Science' seminar helps clinicians incorporate best evidence into clinical practice and helps them develop skills to practice in a manner consistent with the biopsychosocial model of care.
* * * WARNING: This episode has swearing. Please do not listen if you or those around you are easily offended.
Questions & topics discussed include:
-
How much has your course changed since it first came to the UK in 2015 (hosted by host Matt Phillips in his former clinic)?
-
What would you say to a recently qualified soft tissue therapist who has heard that some of the concepts taught during their professional studies is questionable and needs updating?
-
"Poke the Bear, don't hump the s*%t out of it" - This image & message has resonated more than any other amongst health care professionals. What is it saying and why is it so popular?
-
In the 90’s you were learning to be a Chiropractic in Toronto Canada and hearing at that particular school about bio-psycho-social approach. Why has it not become mainstream
-
What's your opinion of manual therapy?
-
Some therapists are reluctant to change because they fear they are going to have to re-learn everything. But that’s not the case, right?
-
You describe manual therapy as a symptom modifier – can you expand on that?
-
Should being able to understand & recognize bias be a fundamental skill for health care providers?
-
Do course attendees need a particular background or knowledge?

Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
In March on the Sports Therapy Association Videocast & Podcast, our weekly focus will be on up & coming CPD (Continuing Professional Development), with the aim of introducing approaches, ideas and techniques that could potentially help you, the soft tissue therapist, manage your learning and growth.
We start off with an episode discussing the two part 'Dermoneuromodulation' (DNM) course coming to the UK, being delivered in both Birmingham and Exeter in March and June (dates down below).
Special guests Mike Grice and Daniel Williams of Movement Therapy Education who have organised the face-to-face UK workshops join us in this episode to discuss:
- The pitfalls of using Google to select CPD
- Why the name Dermoneuromodulation (DNM)
- The roots of DNM
- Listening to Diane Jacobs for the first time at the San Diego Pain Summit n 2015.
- How DNM brings the 'Bio' and 'Psychosocial' together
- The workshop instructor Rey Allen and Mike Reoch
- What to expect from the DNM workshops
Workshop Details
• DNM Level 1 - taught by Mike Reoch: March 12/13/14 in Birmingham, March 18/18/20 in Exeter.
• DNM Level 2 - taught by Rey Allen: June 4/5/6 in Birmingham, June 10/11/12 in Exeter.
What is DermoNeuroModulation?
Dermoneuromodulation (DNM) was founded by Diane Jacobs, a physiotherapist for over 40 years and a manual therapist for over 30. In the 1990's, Diane studied with David Butler (co-author with Lorimer Moseley of the hugely successful 'Explain Pain' manual for therapists and patients). Given the idea that she was less likely affecting tissue targets and more likely treating peripheral nerves, Diane started to read the evidence and investigate the anatomy & mechanism of the nervous system. Her attention was drawn in particular to cutaneous nerves, something that no manual therapy teacher had ever mentioned before. By 2005, Dianne was calling her work 'DermoNeuroModulation', later renamed to DermoNeuroModulating to refer to it as a verb. In Diane's own words:
"DermoNeuroModulating, or -tion, is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its container). It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient's physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change - while optional, it can also be optimal."

Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
In the final episode of this month's focus on 'Women's Health', we are absolutely honoured to be joined by special guests Gráinne Donnelly, Emma Brockwell, both physiotherapists passionate about developing the knowledge and awareness necessary to optimise each female athlete’s potential.
Gráinne and Emma and Dr Helen McElroy (unable to join us for this episode - wish you well Helen!) are about to launch a course entitled 'The Athletic Female', specifically designed for fitness & health care professionals & coaches working with female athletes. With input from a highly respected panel of multi disciplinary specialists and a growing online community to mix with fellow health care professionals, this course is something any therapist working with female athletes should seriously consider.
In this episode, Gráinne and Emma talk about how things have been changing since the release back in March 2019 of the first ever UK guideline to specifically offer evidence based recommendations for postnatal women returning to running – 'Returning to Running Postnatal – Guidelines for Medical, Health and Fitness Professionals Managing this Population' (Goom, Donnelly & Brockwell 2019).
Together they break discuss some of the most important considerations when working with a female athlete, all of which are key components of 'The Athletic Female' course:
- The importance & relevance of the Menstrual Cycle
- Working with female teenage athletes
- The athletic pelvic floor
- Breast Health
- RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport)
- Implications of the perimenopausal and menopausal transition
- Common misconceptions about Diastasis recti
